I was never in the clubs, but made the scouts ....

Any chance of getting a merit badge for repairing Land Rovers?
i.e.  crossed wrenches (spanners?)

Hi,

I was in the cubs for a brief period, never really understood what was going on, although I read The Jungle Book (probably aged 6 or 7). I never made the Scouts, but was in the ATC (Air Cadets) from 14 to 17 ... and think I was in the last tranche called up for Nationjal Service. They actually asked me when I wanted to go.

My entry was the first to be all volunteers ... by volunteers, I mean those who signed on for more than the statutory two years. I signed for nine years' got paid nearly four times what they paid the conscripts.

I ran a mechanics badge course for our local scout group last summer using a Land Rover as the demo vehicle. It was a V8 90, but they loved it!

Whilst I was in the Scouts for many years, I am definitely (alas) not a mechanic.

However, as someone with a IIA Forward Control, currently broken, this thread is of interest !

I was driving along a tarmac road last week, flat, 30mph, & lost drive. Engaging four wheel drive regained motion & I got home.

The short half shaft came out easily, but I cannot remove the long one, see picture, will 9nly come out an inch or so.

When I go, somehow, get it out, sure I will need a replacement. Where please do people recommend I buy replacement half shafts from?

Many thanks.

You need a 1m long steel rod/bar (½" by ¼" flat bar from B&Q is what I use). You remove the half shaft from the other side and push the bar down the axle tube and into the diff and hit the stuck shaft till it releases from the diff.

Don't know much about forward controls, but if the half shafts are the same as bonneted control vehicles then you can buy decent half shafts from Paddocks 4x4 - Britpart.

Apologies for the slow reply, hadn’t realised you had so kindly helped.

Well, the half shaft is out & clearly this was the problem !

Thank you, I will start looking for a replacement tomorrow, beginning with Paddocks or Dingocroft (quite local).

Will look at parts nos, hope IIA FC same as IIA & any FC differences came in on IIB.

Is the Britpart quality considered ok please ?

Thank you.

Does it have a standard rear axle or an env or Salisbury?

I'm running with Britpart half shafts - no problems after a couple of years (touch wood).

Think it’s just a standard axle.

Thank you, good to know you are happy with a Britpart half shaft.

Hi,

I've broken one half-shaft ... powering up a 1:5 slope, hit a patch of ice ... engine revved ... hit tarmac again. Bang!

I also broke something in France ... can't remembered what ... but I had to pull both half-shafts and the rear prop-shaft, and drive 600 miles home on just the front axle, towing a caravan.

Hmmm? Maybe I'd taken a tooth off the crown wheel, or pinion? My mind is totally blank. I can remember the local farmer being very interested in what I was doing in his lane. That was the only time I went over to France without Barbara.
