What you did with your Series 2s in July ?
« Reply #135 on: July 26, 2020, 09:25:27 PM »

Manxcat came over for a socially distance visit so we talked a lot of nonsense, fettled a strimmer and made a start on de-gunging Tonkas engine bay in readiness for the return of the engine from the engineer.  I can recommend brushing on neat Brillo Degreaser to soften up oily crud prior to hosing. Discovered I need a new track rod end...

I don't suppose you have another spare engine ???
Or even a spare CAV DPA injection pump?  I'm on the lookout for one in good condition.

And tightened up the loose arm on the steering box.  :whistle

Fitted new ( to me ) gearbox , handbrake bits and a few little parts. Tomorrow we hope to get the last remaining parts back in and fill engine and gearboxes with oil.

Well not exactly today but I finished some underneath work.

Removed the prop shaft , inspected d the u joints, wire brushed it, and applied a coat of black paint.
Removed the transmission brake system, cleaned it and then replaced the oil seal. Replaced the rear pinion oil seal.
Drained the transfer case and transmission. Cleaned off 60 years of grunge , cleaned and painted the cover, put on a new gasket then refilled everything with 90 weight..
Took it for a short test drive.
Think it is ready for winter snow removal.

Cheers,
John

Hi,

I found a project yesterday, mentioned it to Barbara.

She had a go, found two more ... and then lost interest.  :thud

Reminds me of the husband who complained ... "Not for love nor money!"

His wife replied ... "You never mentioned money, Darling!"

I'll wait till the time is right ... then go into sulk mode.  ;)

Not a series I'm afraid but my Discovery clocked up an interesting mileage.

Went to visit my engine, nearly finished and to be delivered home in the next day or two.  Rebore, new pistons & rings, reground crank, new valve stems, skimmed head, skimmed flywheel....and a long list more. Comment from the engineer  "I'm amazed it had any oil pressure at all..." . Yet, apart from blowing oil it was, to my untrained eye, running OK.  Proves that even a very worn engine can continue to run pretty well.

Not so sure about the black paint, I might brighten it up a bit before it goes back in.... it was Duck-egg when it left...

Started it up !

Dormy has sat patiently 6 months waiting for me to return from being stuck abroad. Battery was charged then the earth lead disconnected before I left and still held over 12 volts. Oils and water all as should be.

Primed the carb by hand, a bit of choke, a very quick press of the starter and she was running lovely.

Only 1 1/2 weeks to go before I am allowed out (quarantined) and can actually drive it.  :RHD

Did some vertical winching to get 150kg of rubber roofing up the scaffold.

It was 150kg of rubber roofing so it would have turned into a remake of the Dambusters bouncing bomb!

Looks good. I might follow up with your man in Stirling when I can get around to it. My engine "runs fine" but I suspect it is very tired all over. I don't really have kit for lifting out my engine so the process of getting it done needs thought.

^^^^ There are enough of us about who could lend an engine crane for a weekend either side of the operation, I'm sure.
