Regretfully ...
« on: September 11, 2020, 04:53:48 PM »

Hi,

I've tried very hard to find a "project" vehicle, searching for, and posting WANTED adverts, offering up to £1,000.

Effectively Zilch ... at least within recovery distance. I was still searching the web, until minutes before I walked out the front door ... and returned with an '06 Freelander, bought from a dealer about four miles up the A1

TDi, manual, tow-hook. MOT dated today.

Here endeth a long search. My thanks and apologies to all who supported me.

My club membership expires  at end of December. I'd like to stay, unless anybody has strong objections. ???

^ I believe the rule for membership is "enthusiasm for the Land Rover Series 2 " not "must own one".

You have a Land Rover.  :cheers

Having recently bought an old Freelander (which I thought I would never do) for £500, it is so good makes SII's look embarrassing.

Hi,

Thanks for encouraging comments.

I've only driven it about a mile "on test", and about three of four miles home, but I'm very pleased. I found it in a well hidden , high walled yard, a few miles up Watling Street from Milton Keynes. I took me three trips to find the yard, which is operated by surprisingly large number (one family?) Asians ... who were extremely courteous. No pressure. Their yard was full of similar vehicles.

I have no criticism of the car, apart from the "well legal" tyres looking like they came off something more "commercial", despite being on alloy wheels. No matter, I'll give them a whirl ... budget allows me to fit a new set all round, if necessary ... lo-profile?  :whistle

Barbara hasn't seen it yet, other than on the screen of the CCTV camera that covers our front door.

Both the standard Freelander tyres and one of the optional size are available as van tyres (if that is what you have) so they is what you are likely to have, as 4 van tyres are going to be cheaper than 4 4x4 tyres.
As long as they are the same size and make you should be ok, one thing to remember (which by the sounds of it you will not need for a while), is that new tyres on a Freelander 1 need to go on the back not the front.

602, did you end up with a late F1, or the newer square shaped Freelander 2?

Thanks, Graham.

 :-\
and not Just Freelanders - New tyres should always be fitted to the rear axle first.
Buy 2 for the front, then the (worn) rears should go on the front and the new tyres on the rear.

In other words, you want your "best" tyres on the rear.

This has been standard operating advice for many years now.

Tyre sizes on the early freelander is critical...

Even to the point of landrover issuing a service bulletin to rotate the tyres regularly to keep the wear even.

Failure of the IRD is a common issue if not followed.

Many people when they get a worn tyre will pop along to their local tyre fitters and replace maybe just the one tyre, or often at best two of them. With the Land Rover Freelander you need to BEWARE!

The Land Rover Freelanders are permanent four wheel drive. Drive is taken to the back wheels through the IRD unit (transfer box) along the prop shaft and into the rear differential. With this process it is crucial that all four wheels are of the same ratio – basically the same size and type.

A differing ration between the front and rear wheels causes excessive strain to be put down the transmission line. The ratio difference is caused by fitting different radius tyres to the front compared to the rear. This can be done by using incorrectly sized tyres; worn tyres on one end of the vehicle and new tyres on the other (don’t just replace two tyres, make sure you replace all four at the same time!); or running very low tyre pressures on one end of the vehicle.

So what happens if you have a differing ratio between the front and the rear tyres? Well, in a nutshell, you are liable to damage your rear differential. A radius difference of just 10mm can destroy a rear differential in just 5 miles!

The need to match tyre sizes between the front and the rear is mentioned in the Land Rover hand book, however they don’t highlight just how much damage it can cause!

If you have one with the M47 BMW Diesel engine, the tyre wear issue should not be so evident. The final drive and IRD ratios were changed to allow for greater variation in tyre size, so you should be ok.
