In fact the Post Office is but one example of ineptitude (and dishonesty).

 A shame but true  :shakeinghead

Reminds me of our local " Council " run leisure centre which was to close due to huge losses .... miracle of miracles a private company took over the running and quickly made rather large profits on an ongoing basis !

It's a bit unfair to compare the Royal Mail to other more modern operators. Generations of labour laws and union activity mean that it is very expensive to employ a Postie, whereas Amazon manipulate 'the system' to keep their staff costs very very low. So the Royal Mail ultimately cannot compete as the playing field is far from level!

Chris.

At the risk of triggering Alan’s “political lock”, it’s not the fault of the Post Office that their staff are effectively unionised, it’s the fault of the neoliberal agenda followed by four decades of government that’s allowed unregulated competition from companies that employ people in unfavourable conditions, and a market where consumers constantly pick lowest price in preference to quality of service.

IMHO, better to level the playing field up, than down.

^^^^ Hear Hear.  The same applies to shoddy replacement parts. Some of the fault lies with those customers who, in days past, pressed for the cheapest possible at the expense of quality. Hopefully suppliers are starting to notice people asking for better stuff.

It's about time too that suppliers should pay for the carriage for the faulty parts to be returned. The buyer through no fault of his own is forced to pay this.

Letting commercial operators take on parcel delivery, an area that can make a decent profit was a very deliberate act aiming to cripple the public service Post Office, leaving it to soldier on without the profitable business but still be lumbered with requirement to deliver to every address. The nonsense now is that we can get 3 or more courier vans a day turning up, usually very sparsely loaded. The inefficiency is vast - but you and I are paying for it so the shareholders of DHL, Hermes and the rest turn a profit.  As you say Wittsend, that one red van could do the job...

Indeed, and a lot of people seem to forget that when they grumble about the price of Royal Mail services. The other delivery companies can pick and choose to a certain extent.

As for the Post Office, the whole postmaster scandal has been absolutely unforgivable.

^^^ Hear hear, listening to the recent radio series on the issue I'm left thinking that a number of senior managers in the Post Office should now be in Jail, alongside the CEO and Board of Southern Water, who have been deliberately dumping raw sewage into rivers for years as a profit motivated business decision.

Strongly agree with all said here!  The Postmaster scandal is a national disgrace (highlighted for years by Private Eye), and there are people, moving onto lucrative jobs, who should be in jail or banned from active public powerful positions…..

Yes let's get back to GB plates or UK plates as they will be quite soon.

Tip of the week:

Make sure your new UK plates are not too a permanent fixture  :shakeinghead

I have a feeling that they will soon have to be ENG plates the way things are going  ;)

CYM plates have been on sale for decades now.

ENG plates, might get some popularity traction if they win the football ?  :whistle

UK plates, lets hope we get some decent looking enamel ones as made in days of yore  :RHD

A friend has a pressed GB plate on his 80" which has "pays de galles" on it under the GB lettering. It's brilliant. I've never seen another.
