The Parking rules...
« on: October 05, 2019, 10:16:17 PM »

More and more frequently I have returned to find Solihull products had gravitated to each other  :RHD

Is this just an anomaly or is it spreading nationally?

Self-preservation. There's a partly illusionary feeling that people with special interests tend to be more careful of other people's property, so a fellow land-rover owner is slightly less likely to be the kind who will carelessly let the door swing into your vehicle.

It's not always true - I remember my brother in law feeling  sad that a fellow-attendee at a small jazz club meeting had scratched his car, and especially so that he hadn't left a note.

^^^^
Quite so ... who ever owns up these days ???

Parking Rule (1)
Park well away from the herd - less chance of damage and the walk will do you good.

Parking Rule (2)
Park at the end of a row, try not to park in a double row - you don't idiots parking in front or behind you.
Some idiots like to park 6" inches from your rear bumper, making loading in the shopping more difficult.
In such cases sit on their bonnet and leave the shopping cart right on their bumper!
Revenge !!!

And then, when you do park miles away from the shop door, as Neal points out ^^^, people feel sorry for a lone parked vehicle and feel the need to park next to you - despite there being acres of free space  :thud
And like does tend to attract like...

Parking habits are strange and worthy of a phD study.

No one's nowadays going to own up to dinging someone's car and the resultant insurance aggro + costs if they can get away with it realistically!
Personally if someone scratched my LR I'd probably never even notice among all the other dents and scuffs ( and couldn't care less anyway tbh  ;) )

Hi,

Slightly OT, but wouldn't if be nice if the white lines between parking bays were 300mm (12") wide, and everybody parks with their OS wheels ON that line ... or some other way,   ???  provided everybody did the same thing.

Many yonks ago ... probably early 1950s, Plod visited our school to give a road safety lecture. He said that cars should drive into parking bays and reverse out. The idea is tot get out of everybody's way, ASAP, and drive out when the the exit is clear. I'm not sure that I agree, but at least there is a rule for every body to follow.

How about parking bays being only 5ft wide, but laid out in a herring bone pattern, so that nobody parks hard against either side of your car. Hmmm! Maybe not! OK ... 5ft wide parking bay, set at 45ish degrees, with 2ft gap between bays ... and hope that two cars don't want to open their opposing doors at the same time.  Discuss!

Many Defender owners believe in PRA (Parking Rules Apply).

See another Defender (or earlier) and they believe you should park next to it.

It, to them, is a friendly gesture and bonds the owners of all "proper" Land Rovers together.

And why not?

Cars have got wider - planing and building regs have not caught up with reality (garages are too small) they still think we drive Austin 7 sized cars  :shakeinghead
Naturally car park and retail park owners don't give a $&*!£ about the public - they just want to maximise their earnings and "fine" as many mugs as possible  :shakeinghead

The herd mentality is an interesting phenomenon - why do people feel obliged to park next to me when there's plenty of empty space in the car park ???

Cars have got wider......

Drivers and passengers have got considerably wider too.  They can't just slide out of a partially open door like they used to.

Years ago I used to have a Peugeot 104.  I could fit it in under the staircase in a multi storey car park near where I lived.  It was like having a private, reserved parking space.  No one else could fit either their car or themselves in that tight space.
