Hydraulic fluid level warning lamp.
« on: September 28, 2021, 06:46:47 AM »

Hi,

I went looking for hydraulic fluid level warning lamps, thinking that it would be a good idea if anybody used a clutch master cylinder on their braking system. A clutch reservoir  usually has a smaller capacity than a brake reservoir.

I found this ..... https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/brake-fluid-float-switch

Probably difficult to fit to the brake chamber of an S2 bean-can ... unless you reduced the height of the inner "wall". Hmmm! Balance the reduced brake fluid capacity if the clutch system leaks, against the (assumed) improved safety of having a warning lamp. ???

When did a fluid level warning lamp become mandatory ... if ever they did?

I once had an MOT fail, due to a fluid "seep" from the clutch union at the bottom of the bean can. Fair enough, as the inner chamber, and outer case, and the clutch outlet union, all use the same fibre washers.

You can buy lids with level switches for the bean can off the shelf, although from memory they will only fit single outlet bean can reservoirs. They were fitted to late P4s, 5s and Jags I think, possibly others.

It was also fitted to the 2B FC ( Part Number 529973) but again with the separate reservoir in the clutch  Master Cylinder  , single outlet brake  reservoir

Hi,

Maybe the long gap between "plinks", as the fluid drips onto your boots, should indicate the level is getting low?
