Old fuel tank, any other use?
« on: October 17, 2021, 10:44:38 AM »

I have replaced the fuel tank in my 11a as it had a small leak, before it goes to scrap, is there any other use for this tank ???
I did wonder about making a under centre seat tool box :bright-idea

I often throw things out then regret it when I think of another use >:D

It's likely to have petrol fumes still present unless you clean it out very thoroughly..

Cut the top off, drill a couple of holes in the bottom, paint it DBG and use it for a garden planter. :first

I think you've got a good idea with a lockable, secret/camouflaged storage box under the driver's seat, where a spare fuel tank would fit. Unless you already have a spare tank there? Under the center-seat there isn't much space if you have a PTO or an overdrive (or a lefthand drive, with the handbrake lever rod!). Or cut pieces of it off for an under-bonnet box on top of the footwell. I cut down a metal waste basket from IKEA for mine. It fits 3L of oil, a funnel, rags, wheel chocks and a bottle of lead-substitute additive. It doesn't need a lid; the bonnet closes it off well enough.

I'm in the process of putting a scrap tank with the top cut off into the under-passenger seat position in Tonka, replacing the existing ( and leaking) tank. Simpler job in a twin-tank, under seat fill vehicle. The 10 gallons of the tank under the driver seat is enough range for any trip I'm likely to be doing.  I'll keep the original old tank in case some future owner wants to restore it to original...

.... and can afford to carry an extra 45 litres   :-X

Hi,

Rickett's Radiators,  in Swansea, used to let petrol tanks stand, full of caustic soda, for 24 hours.

If they could then still smell petrol, they gave it another 24 hours.

I wonder how they kept this solution inside a leaking tank?

I've used the bash/mounting plate off an old tank and built a waterproof box on it to mount a diesel heater in. The hot air is then blown in through the LHD hand brake hole.

I'll remember that idea! No butchering the seatbox for a nice, warm heater!

Dunk the whole thing in a larger tank of caustic soda?
