''Overdrive by Fairey'' sticker
« on: December 15, 2022, 09:00:47 PM »

I've been looking at stickers on line for the Fairey overdrive. I can't remember what the original one looks like. Are the replicas a proper image of the original? I see that Embertons sell them. I'd like to treat my Land Rover to one.

''Overdrive by Fairey'' sticker
« Reply #1 on: December 15, 2022, 09:16:26 PM »

The one that was on my Carawagon when I got it was the white one with the diagonal lettering across it. I am not sure when the overdrive was purchased and fitted so I can't help with the date but I think the white sticker was before the silver/grey one.

EDIT: mine was this style:

''Overdrive by Fairey'' sticker

Thanks  Calum. I think the one more suitable for my 1975 Series 3 will be the later silver oval version.

The Fairey unit didn't come out until around 1975 anyway so I would expect a unit bought new then to have had the earlier style decal in the box with it ???

It's really down to personal taste!

Thanks again Calum. I'll go for the early one but I'll leave it until next year.

I looked into this in detail a few years back, seems things have got very 'creative'. Most are DTP mash-ups. ie... 'have Adobe Illustratorr, will travel' jobbies. This is a shame. I wanted a badge as seen in our family album from 1977. This shows a white oval without border. Closest today is a silver offering, with the wrong font. There's lot of free licence going on. Some are 'orrible. If it's your bag, and they seem to sell, Falon makes the 'fakest' fake.

These two are complete fiction:

Here's the one with an oval border, which I'm fairly sure is also fiction, logo, font and layout definitely is. How it's possible with modern tech not to get a logo correct astounds me. If we can't even copy...

Is it a good idea in the world we live to advertise on the outside of the vehicle the goodies that lie within!

What about Tdi, V8 badges etc? It's not giving away any security details like "Tracker Fitted."
PetrolFour. That badge is not real. It usually says something like "Four Wheel Drive Station Wagon."!

Mine has a very faded grey/silver oval. It was stuck on to the first respray that was probably done in the late sixties or seventies. When I acquired it in the early eighties it had had another colour change, but they must have masked the sticker.

Gibbo, that's as my photo. No aviation or marine logo.

I won't bore you with the details, however in another life I dabble in Desktop Publishing - print design.  I wouldn't even say I was all that good. Good enough for all but another pro to see where I fall short. Generally this work is done on the industry standard, an Apple.

Back in the day via photographic typesetting/Letraset etc the original sticker would have required a fair measure of craft and skill to produce. It would have been time consuming and expensive. Back then printing cost a heap and for good reason. Some of you will be at an age to be a retired typesetter / print industry pro; thus know what I speak of.

Today, with a few mouse clicks, and at most, an hour's work, a proper, proper ''Overdrive by Fairey'' sticker cannot be hard to do. If you really want to know, you'd use Adobe Illustrator vector software.

Forgive my rant, whoever produces this %^&* is brazen about it.  There's nil attempt. You'll have to take my word on this, when professional software allows the job to be deskilled this far - thus make it so vastly easy to do - for the finished result to be either of the stickers below, you'd have to be at levels of incompetency it's not possible to put to words.
