Starter handle dog. 2.5 petrol engine
« on: May 17, 2023, 03:11:52 PM »

Can a starter handle dog be fitted to a 2.5 Land Rover petrol engine :bright-idea
I know this would need to have a metric thread but were any made ???

Not that I'm aware of I'm afraid. V8s yes, but 2.5 4 cylinder, I don't think so. That said, I've never physically compared the threads. I assume they were metric???

I heard that the 5 bearing 2.25 starter dog fits but I don't know if it's true. I suspect it won't because the crankshafts are completely different.

Try ERC4672
Late S3 5MB engine I believe - the military requested them IIRC.

These are not cheap :stars
and all the listings I see have no mention of it fitting a 2.5 petrol engine but I will keep looking and perhaps phone in the morning...
not wishing to buy a expensive paper weight

I have a starter dog from a 2.25 5mb diesel engine if it is what you need.

Hi,

I assume (hope) that you do not have to remove the old nut bolt.

I do fear this may be a problem :shakeinghead
this is why I need to be sure the new dog will fit before I remove the bolt
as it might be a lot of blood, sweat and bad language only to put the bolt back in :thud

That's why I haven't bothered. My 2.5 engine is 38 years old so the bolt will be well in.

If it is the finer metric thread then it will fit. (and I am pretty certain this is the part number - but best to double check)
The reason you will not see any mention of the 2.5 engine is probably because LR never fitted it to that engine AFAIK. It is a useful mod if you can find one at the right price!
A decent 'windy' gun should shift the original bolt - I have never had an issue with any of mine never coming loose that way - if you don't have one then try a local garage/tyre place and get them to loosen it, then nip it up to drive home.
The only difference between the 2.25 and 2.5 crank is simply the throw to get the extra capacity.

The other way to remove it if the engine is in place is to wedge your spanner against the nearside chassis leg and jab the starter

Here's the other other way to loosen/remove the crank pull bolt ...

You just need a 1" Whitworth ring spanner (cheap from a car boot/autojumble sale) and a length of steep pipe.
