OT - Rustproofing
« on: August 19, 2019, 01:44:39 PM »

OT vehicle, but I suppose it applies to all vehicles.
I have just purchased a 300tdi Disco 1 that has been "waxoyled" from new and has had no paint or welding since it left the factory in 1996. It looks like a 1 year old car underneath (and above), which must be pretty unique for a UK vehicle.
I have now had a chance to get under it properly and there is Waxoyl (or something) oozing out of every orifice. The outside surfaces have developed an overall dull black waxy "patina", and it would be nice to keep it that way. Would you just reinject wax (Dinitrol?) into the box sections, or give the whole underneath another spray. (I dont want it to look as though I am trying to hide something!)

I suppose it just shows that even a 23 year old Disco can survive virtually unscathed if it is looked after, (Pity JLR didn't do it, but then they wouldnt sell as many new vehicles)

A non-rusty disco 1? That's a rare beast indeed!

Waxoyl et al get a bad rep as so many vehicles have it applied on top of existing rust. It can't fix it, and hiding it can make things even worse. As you say, it's actually pretty effective at protecting steel if it's applied before the onset of rusting.

Has your disco spent most of its life thus far down south somewhere? With the amount of salt that gets dished out in winter further north, even a waxoyl'd from new disco would struggle to not turn into a crumbly mess.

Yes, waxoyl now isnt up to much, but in 1997 maybe was ok. It lived in Leicestershire all its life, and the owner must have had OCD. Full log of everything done to it - e.g. "adjusted tappets .05mm" Took one of the rear bumper side cappings off and loads of wax where you usually find weetabix. A keeper methinks.

Hi Worf.  Where did you find that Disco then?

The guy is a Defender specialist in Barrow on Soar Leicestershire. He buys and sells, but this one was one he had bought a few years ago to keep. He said he had built up a personal collection of 17 "keepers" which is now about 10 too many, but I dont know exactly what he has. He appears on Ebay from time to time

Sounds like a keeper. Decent ones are pretty rare now, and (in the short to medium term at least) the values are only going up.

I saw a 200 on the road last week, and realised I hadn't seen one in aaaages. 300's aren't far behind.

Objectively, my old 300tdi disco was probably the best land rover I've owned. Almost as capable as a defender off the road, but much comfier to drive on it.

Is it uk motor from first reg, as there were quite a few repatriated from japan due to being right hand drive but not up to their emissions and testing.

Definitely UK. I have original bill of sale, including options chosen (Trinity Motors, Hinkley) and full records of everything done to it from purchase.

I read this old post on the S1 forumn-

A mixture of waxoyl, diesel and old gear oil will work well, delivered at high enough pressure for mixture 'mist' to exit out of all apertures.

I own a 1997 Disco 1 300TDi which I had given a professional Dinitrol-treatment when I bought it 3 years from new, so about 18 years ago. There has been some welding, but nothing major. I'll try to attach a photo of the underside I took last year. And one of the upperside, while I'm at it. Weatherwise the UK and the Netherlands probably aren't that far apart…

And it has lived outside most of the time, with normal use in wintry conditions, no pampering in warm garages…

Dinitrol, in the past and may still do a wax for dirty steel. Used in extreme conditions, might be worth a look at it and see if its any good.

Dinitrol or buzzweld products....

Both have vastly improved creep and self healing properties over old tech like Waxoyl...
