Yep, these things can cause huge disruption, ours are not quite on the same scale but the A83 closures mean a 60 mile detour.

Even something as minor as repairing a damaged culvert under the road just north of Callander meant north-bound traffic was diverted overnight at Stirling up to Perth and across to Lochearnhead - something like 40 extra miles, a lot of it on a pretty narrow road.

There is a road between Holmfirth and Saddleworth that is known as the "Isle of Skye road" I'm not sure what the connection with Saddleworth is?

While Wikipedia mentions the complete A635 road, and includes a short explanation for the Isle of Skye section, a more comprehensive explanation, with pictures, is found here.
