speedos with trip meters
« on: May 26, 2021, 08:50:51 PM »

Hi All,
I'm still optimistically planning my trip across the Pyrennes this June and have bought one of the excellent Vibraction road books. However, they use mileages to indicate where the next turning is and my speedo doesn't have a trip meter and my mental maths wouldn't be up to it.
I looked at ebay and the prices were  :agh

Has anyone got a speedo with a trip they would like to sell/lend me or is there a cheap gps type solution that I could use for this trip?

Thanks

Mark

 :cheers

What size tyres are you running?
The trip was virtually universally standard on military vehicles. Given that some were on 6.00 x 16, and variations up to 7.50x16, there have to be corresponding differing speedos. As you need to track trip distances quite accurately, you need to get the right one.
Surely in this day and age, there's an app that does this on a smart phone???

I’ve got 7.50s.
I’m hoping to get something stand alone for simplicity. If it’s like our Alps trip I’ll be using my phone  to take lots of pictures!

My 88 has a RR classic speedo with a trip meter almost bang on and an easy fit, apart from the lights. I think it was a Tenner of EBay for the whole pod plus post.

Sounds like my budget Paul!
Is it the right size for the Series 2 dashboard?

When my son and I went through the Pyrenees in the Defender, to Les Comes,, a few years ago I used Copilot to navigate.  It's not expensive, an app on the phone, the maps are on the phone so you're not reliant on internet, just GPS.
I programmed all the waypoints by lat and long for the off road bit, and in the usual way for the civilised bit. Not much topographical info but worked really well for the nav, and gives you the speed limits on the roads in kph too.

May be worth a try

I've found a gps bicycle computer thing for about £30 that looks like it will do the job nicely. It also has the advantage that it can show km's so I don't need to convert all the distances in the roadbook!

RidewithGPS is a cycling app that is free and on your phone. You can map the route and it will call out instructions. Clearly its going to be a little upset as you should be going a little faster but a good app.

Yes, fits well, just the lights and the extra MPH that's different.
