Hi,

OT, but I believe there is a Harley Davidson (sp?) hearse operating in the UK.

A few weeks ago, I passed a horse drawn hearse driving up Watling Street, heading North out of Milton Keynes. I wasn't able to stop, to check if it was my friends from Swansea.

Apparently Prince Philip's hearse is a Land Rover. What else.

The Evening Standard seems to agree it will be a Land Rover. No mention of model, but apparently designed by Prince Philip himself.

It’s a Land Rover Special Vehicles conversion. A defender 130 with a bus like body. Built to transport people on shooting trips over semi rough terrain, like moors for grouse shooting etc.

From the DT website:

It was the Duke’s “great interest in design” which inspired him to help design the modified Land Rover that he wanted to carry his coffin. A second, support vehicle will also be on site.

A senior palace official said: “The Duke of Edinburgh had a hand, many, many years ago, in the design of these vehicles.”

As ranger of Windsor Great Park, the Duke could often be seen driving through the grounds in a Land Rover. In Jan 2019, he had a lucky escape after overturning one near his Sandringham estate, from which he managed to walk away unscathed but shocked and shaken. He gave up driving shortly afterwards.

It's amusing to read there's a spare Land Rover on standby for the funeral procession. He obviously knew a lot about Land Rovers, having one spare. I reckon the Land Rover will be the main talking point and I wonder how many clones of it there will be.

Hi Neil,

... and how many will be sold as the original (or it's back-up) complete with "By Royal Approval" or whatever the phrase is.

NOT OT, because I won't mention the model (Dinky? ) of a "Lipton's Tea" van had to be withdrawn, because it was sign written  ('ceeding small). While Lipton's tea had Royal Approval, the model cars didn't.

The models that had already been sold suddenly appreciated in value.

Army engineers were preparing Prince Philip's funeral Land Rover after he came out of hospital.
I wonder when a diecast model of the funeral Land Rover will appear. I won't be buying it. My large collection of diecast Land Rover and other models goes under the hammer at the end of this month.

And reported today with pictures of the Land Rover he chose and designed.  He certainly had taste.  It isn't reported but I feel sure his written instructions were that no Series Land Rover was to be cut up just for his funeral and any old defender will do.

I am sure that many on here feel as I do  that his choice of understated funeral arrangements strike a cord and I continue to admire him now he has passed away as in life.  The family is less colourful without him.

It's nice it's got the Series II deep skirts.

Within one of the articles I've recently read about the Prince and his funeral arrangements it quoted him saying something along the lines of not wanting a bunch of fancy cars in procession - Land Rovers were good enough.

Hi Chris,

I disagree ... but each to his own.

Many yonks ago (maybe still?),. is was believed that you could judge the state of the National Economy by looking at young ladies skirts ... the shorter the skirts, the richer we all were felt.

Does the same apply to Land Rover skirts?

PS. I didn't like Triumph Herald "skirts" either ... too much metal. Do we have a resident artist who could show us what an S2, and a Herald would look like with two inch deep sills?

Chris.

I agree! Obviously a design nod to earlier vehicles.
