Cape York, Australia, 1972.
« on: April 14, 2021, 11:24:57 AM »

Picked from a mention on another forum, a couple of Australian S2As on a trip to Cape York in 1972, almost 50 years ago.

We used that type of tyre fix [or something similar] to save an almost new low pressure rear tractor tyre which got gashed by a broken pane of that heavy duty glass with embedded wire many years ago.

What I want to know is how the *******  ***** did he get his hands clean afterwards.  Present day silicone sealer is bad enough but it has nothing on that stuff :stars

I'm reading a book at the minute about the 1972 Trans Americas Expedition in Range Rovers and they very quickly dumped the swamp tyres in favour or Firestone SAT's due to overloading the drive train and destroying numerous diffs.
Apparently Land Rover advised the expedition against them and even ran tests to prove the standard "skinny" tyres provided more traction.

That tyre gunge does look messy but quite useful in a way....

I have never heard of, nor seen that tire gunk used before.  Wonder if it's even allowed here in the States.  Closest thing I've seen is a tire patch you place on the inside - you clean the inner rubber, add some tire adhesive, then add a rubber patch, and then smear the whole mess with the adhesive.  But definitely have seen a two part mix.

I wonder what memories the young girl took away, and how she viewed them over the following 50 years :-)

I hope she doesn't find the tyre gunk the most interesting part of the trip.
