Loaning things to a museum
« on: October 18, 2019, 05:06:30 PM »

Has any one any experience of this?
I currently have a 1930 spoked wheel cargo trailer, fully restored, we use it for tip runs! it was a Lad & Dad project.
As far as we can find out its one of two left.
Now it's in the way, I don't want to part with it but would like it preserved so has any one any experience of loaning things to a museum?

HI,

If you are able to contact Mike Worthington Williams (Google should find him (if he is still with us, he's a year younger than me), he should be able to advise. If he is still working, he may be interested in doing an article on your trailer.

If you do make contact, please pass on our regards ... John and Barbara Williams of the SHVR and Swansea Valley. If he looks blank, mention "Reliant Sabre" and Barbara was once the Press officer at DVLA. Friends of Gabe. Congtatulate him on his "honour" (OBE or something like that)

Hi,

I done a Google for Mike WW. No mention of his demise.

email: [email protected]

Mike used to drive an Austin Heavy 12, called Arthur. I asked him what he drove for "business"

"A Ford Menopause!"

"A what"?

"A Ford Sierra!."

It really depends on the 'museum' you are thinking of loaning to, for example is it accredited? does it have a written policy on accepting items on loan?.

Unless it's accredited you could find yourself in difficulty should you want your trailer back in the future, and it's also not unknown for smaller museums to dispose of items on long term loan.

Whatever you decide to do a written loan agreement which clearly sets out the terms and period of the loan is essential.

I tend to the old adage of  'never a lender or a borrower be..'  ;)

Have you tried the Lake land motor museum not a million miles from you ,   https://www.lakelandmotormuseum.co.uk/ . and Chris Lowe who works there is a club member. They might be interested in it.

Interesting question. My dad has been involved with a small voulenteers museum for 50 years. They gradually built up with many donated / loaned items . A percentage of th items although old were not totallly relevant but still accepted. The paperwork systems were not massively organised but got better in time.

Wind forward to the present and a major move and revamp using modern interpretation and a smaller building and they have an amasing museum but ended up with masses of redundant stuff. So a big problem arose of identifying the redundant stuff and what to do with it. Some was offered back to the loaner or the family and if not wanted has been stored causing a storage problem.

He reckons museums prefers a gift as a 25 year loan is a long term headache.

Perhaps sell to someone keen and let them be the custodian?

Some years back I went to the National Motorcycle Museum with a folder of photographs showing some considerable detail of a motorcycle that I couldn't identify, it had belonged to a long dead relative.

The man at the museum was as stumped as myself and requested I leave my folder with him to allow the research team to take it further.

I was reassured that all would be safe and secure so with all my details given and a letter off acceptance received I was happy to let them get on with it.

The outcome - after calling to enquire on progress the museum denied all knowledge of my photographs despite sending a copy of their documentation  >:( >:(  I never had the photographs returned or indeed a letter of apology  >:(

Hi,

That is a Gibson or Brockhouse Gibson trailer, there are several owned by members of the series one club.

I have a slightly later Brockhouse BT 9 with “Easy clean” wheels.
