I had similar thoughts.

Are the rings big enough to poke a pole through, to enable the pot to be carried on a pole, between two blokes?

The base appears to be big enough for the pot to lie horizontally, when tipped over ... but that wouldn't empty it, unless tipped further.

Crucibles are generally ceramic and do not usually have rings on, they are carried in a cradle which allows the contents to be poured. Besides it looks to be iron so would only be practicable as a crucible for low melting point metals.

My guess would be that it is to carry vindaloo without posing a hazard to the operative.

I've seen one of these before and recall a similar debate. Wracking my brains to try and remember where I saw it and what it was!

It looks like the outer part of an old fashioned glue pot to me. You’d stick it on the burner, full of water, and it acts like a bain-marie for a smaller pot that you melt the powdered glue in.

I’ve been wrong in the past though, so don’t hold me on it. 🤣
