Digital route map thingies
« on: May 11, 2021, 09:23:13 PM »

Hi All,
In the endless pursuit of my dream to drive my Series 2 over the Pyrennes this summer I need some technical advice.
I have an opportunity to get some off road routes as gps files but have no clue what to do with them.
Is there an idiot proof app or software thingy to display them? Preferably one that works offline as where we're going there won't be much 4g.
The only technology I have to run it is an iphone.

Thanks
Mark

Can I just re-emphasise the idiot proof requirement!

Have a look at Memory Map.
https://memory-map.com/
I have their App on my phone. I only use it for OS maps - I have the whole of the UK at 1:25000 in the phone at all times. No connection needed. And it works on 5 devices, so I also have it on my Laptop.

Their software allows you to use it with different maps, so you might be able to get a sufficiently good map of the area that you wish to travel to.

Note however I paid £360 for it.

Have a look at this:

You may have to email the files to yourself to get them on your phone.

Thanks Chris.
£360 is a bit expensive for me for one trip. Hoping to find something where you can download a 3rd party gps route and it tells you when to turn left or right.
Also need it to work in France/Spain/Andorra.

Thanks Scott, that seemed pretty straightforward even to me!

Gaia, seems to be highly thought about by the Overland community. I prefer some sort of gps receiver to show where I am and then I can always look at paper maps to see roads. GPS receivers would be like Garmin or Magellan, not sure what brands are in the UK.
Some tablets have gps receivers in them that allow programs like Gaia to keep track of where you are.

Probably not as we’re getting the Bilbao ferry but I’ll keep it in mind.  There should be some other good photo opportunities though.  :first

I can use an ordinary Garmin car GPS machine (satnav), and input GPX files via a computer. Depending on the settings, the route appears as a dotted line.

For laning, I plot waypoints on the computer using Open Street Map. These are then transferred to the Garmin. The satnav plots its own route to the waypoint (at the beginning of the lane), one then travels down the lane whereupon the satnav plots the route via ordinary roads to the next waypoint. Simples!

I use the Waze app on my phone.  As long as it can see the GPS satellites you should be good to go.  It's free.

I went to maps.google.com and zoomed in on the Pyrennes and did "street view" and everything lit up.  So Google has mapped those roads and Waze depends on the Google maps.

Mark, if you mean GPX files, I have personally found Viewranger to be the easiest option. I save the files to my PC, login on my browser and upload them there. Then just login on my phone and hit sync. Every other app I've tried seems very hit and miss as to picking up GPX files actually on my phone.
