Windscreen frame mod
« on: May 17, 2023, 06:47:29 PM »

My car has the short cab which finishes behind the driver’s shoulders so a hard top. I would much prefer a canvas top when I get to this stage of completion on the rebuild. Is it possible to modify the windscreen frame to accept the fittings for canvas ?

You also need the frame that goes over the top of the doors.

Thank you for the advice, I can see what I need now. I try not to ask but the works parts book ( and I assume my manual ) has no information whatever about the canvas top, frame and windscreen. It’s as if it doesn’t exist !

If you are a member, you can download the 1961 Parts Manual that's on the main home page and page 310 of that onwards has everything you need.

Other than the station wagon roof setup all the roof versions are listed in the optional parts catalogues

Yes I am a member, I’ll have a look at the 1961 manual. My brooklands re print ( s2 & 2a) lists nothing at all neither does my parts manual. I haven’t come across the optional equipment information but thanks to the above I now know what I need. I have the tubular frame and just require the sharks tooth rail and the rails above each door.

this is a great book to have, you can probably find it for sale elsewhere too.

invaluable sometimes, even for how many nuts and bolts you may need.

No need to buy the optional extras manual/parts list - we have it in our technical library on the website  :first

It does doesn't surprise me that the existence of the optional equipment catalogue is so little known. It was an issue at dealers back in the 1970's  when I would have to point out that a lot of the parts that are part of a standard vehicle are not listed in the main catalogue , such as safety belts , tilts and steering column locks,  and have to ask then to look at the optional catalogue when I as purchasing parts.

It is and always has been also appallingly laid out!

Might be worth noting, that aside from a whole heap of physical technical and parts manuals (and pdfs) going back to the 1940s, I also have a complete set of LR Microfiche for parts information (manuals, supersessions, price lists etc.) If somebody is stuck for a cross reference, I may just be able to help.

What is so really useful about old dealer parts manuals, is not the printed content - anybody can get that. Its the handwritten scribbles made by hugely experienced parts men over donkey's years. That's priceless.

Means digging out the fiche viewer and getting steam up, but happy to help.

Thanks everyone that’s a great help, it’s been a niggling question for a while, not that I need the parts in the near future. I still have some way to go on rescuing what should really have been scrap but is now shaping up though slowly ! I find that while getting on with some tasks a question, such as that above comes to mind and if I can find the answer in some spare time now it will save time later.
