Not much, on account of having driven to Bristol and back for a meeting. However I did drop by Andover on the way to pick up the hardener which had been missed off my paint order and only noticed yesterday after having mordant washed all the galvanised parts so the clock is ticking on painting, and dropped in on Tom on the way back to pick up some old tie rod ends and admire his 1960 S2 which is a lot more together than mine at the moment.

En route to Andover I had a text from my wife telling me that the person who had agreed to spray my parts had changed his mind  :thud She ended up spending her morning in A&E, ringing various people to see whether they could take on the spraying at short notice (see mordant comment above). Looks promising that someone may do it, otherwise I will be brush painting 2-pack primer tomorrow evening  :agh

Vehicle used for some film work today. Consisted of mostly driving slowly on single track road whilst being filmed. Not being filmed in the traditional sense but think I was being used for thermal imaging targeting and heat source recognition by some very high tech cameras. Ask to do it by a friend who works for Thales(optical defense contractor). I think the forum has gone all broken again as my posts from yesterday are gone and can't seem to be able to attach pics.

So figured it out now. Phone seems to default to a mobile phone mode. Clicked the 'switch to full site'  and better now. Hope it won't do that every time as really can't be *&%^$ using a semi broken forum. Is it possible to reinstate the old one?

Took George to work yesterday, went for a tracking and tyre check - all OK, then spent a bit of time with a young up-start.

George seemed to drive OK, still need to sort the fine adjustment on the engine, also have a couple of oil leaks that need looking at, but then again he is a Land Rover  :-X :RHD :cool

This is a bit of a test... I tried posting it yesterday and didn't get very far.

Finished refurbishing the cold start knob yesterday.  Will hopefully be posting the completely refurbished mechanism later today.

That went well...

Finally got the dash panel finished.  I waited until the cold start knob was ready and polished it at the same time I did the dome light knob and the ignition/headlight switch.  I've included a "before" pic of the ignition switch.

Took the old Denso tape off the front springs. Gave them several brushings of a mixture of old engine oil and white spirit. Wrapped them back up in new Denso tape. A nice clean job for a warm day.

Tip run yesterday with 61 year old land rover and 30 year old trailer.

Third time this week.  The 2 previous times we wereloaded with ton bags of garden rubbish and cut down trees, one bag in the back of the land rover and 2 in the trailer.

The old girl is definitely earning her keep.

Went to a farm sale in Uttoxeter and my brother bought a small heap of logs with a bit of scrap wood and pallets thrown in.

As usual it turned out to be not so small a heap when on the trailer  :agh -- 14' 6" Ifor loaded 18" above the sideboards with the logs/wood and 3 heaps of 5 pallets down the centre.

It certainly made the dormobile sweat a bit on the hills to get back home but my brother now has a good proportion of the winter fuel for the log burner for the princely sum of £12 [plus a lot of hard graft and more to come to size the logs for the burner]

The trailer has now been emptied and is reloaded with my S1 trials motor ready for the P&D event tomorrow  -- and yes, judging by the performance of the dormobile, the logs were much heavier than the series 1 .

At the weekend used it to transport my model railway to a local show. Getting it in was an interesting affair, as more and more items were unscrewed and removed. A SWB does not have a lot of room inside.

It rained heavily on it on Sunday, dry inside - result!

Yes an 88'' isn't much good for model railways although my 88'' did cart all the stock boxes and lighting rig for a mates layout to the big Glasgow show when his passat estate was full of his layout.
Tim hasn't mentioned his previous layout 'Clutton' in GWR days which I thought was superb.

Went to get new tyres , 12 miles, roof off, lovely. Cruising at 50mph. 3 deestones cracked! Rubbish although 4 years old I expect more. Sent them back for consideration.

Ran back on an old deestone and Avon and suprisingly bumpy ride.

Gave it another dose of waxoyl on the outside of the chassis (must get round to the inside) I also gave the springs a do with it jacked up under the chassis.

I can get to the inside of the long g sections of the chassis but has anyone drilled access holes in the box section cross members  and outriggers?

I also got the indicators working again, probably the last job before leafers as other things are getting in the way.

After doing a few miles I'm now working through the oil leaks, :thud I had a leak on the rear diff which I've put down to an issue with the surface finish of the drive flange which is passing oil, plus the gasket was not sitting correctly on the transfer case, so I've replaced the drive flange, seal and also fitted a new gasket on the transfer case.

At the same time I've fitted a couple of the Megasquirt magnetic drain plugs, I have to say they are very strong magnets plus it's nice to be able to tighten up the plug using a conventional 20mm socket, they are reasonably low in profile so I can't see any issues for the way I drive.

I'll do the front axle once it's due for an oil change.

Any one want a couple of slotted plugs?

It gets a light fettle and is sold on as far as I'm aware unmolested. There is a bit about the end sale on the series 2 club Facebook page. And I couldn't possibly comment on it being staged...

Borrowed a double axle flat bed trailer yesterday to move bulky furniture. Pleased that my tow hitch and wiring all worked a treat, even the turn signal relay repeater which has a loud audible warning. First time used in anger and pleased Lenny is earning his keep with nearly five hundred miles covered in last 10 days.

Weather-induced refitting of roof for autumn/winter, after some good summer roof-off fun.
Using my new "roof-o-matic" system: now a 1-person job to remove-replace the hard-top now, and saving back-breaking lifts.

It is very like Thunderbird 2. You can undo the bolts etc., then lift it 6 inches, and drive out for a day of fun.

At the end of the day you can reverse gently right under it again (some juggling to get alignment as close as possible), drop it back on, and remove the two slings. Then lock the doors.
You can leave it like that, even with the bolts all still off, and security isn't any worse than in the normal top-bolted-on state, because to lift it off with the doors locked would be quite problematic - there's nowhere to get your fingers under until you open the doors.

I needed to spend a few ££ at the chandlers on a couple of decent double-blocks. The single pulleys are cheap homebase types, but the double blocks have quite a bit of weight on and cheap ones catastrophically fail. I verified this by experiment on V1 of the design!

Glad to be of service. This was one of those ideas-in-the-pub which actually worked (well, version 1.1 of it, anyway). I have a train-set winter project indoors which has a similar concept.
In you really want to build one, here's some better detail of the bit which has the most force on it.
There's a 5:1 reduction block system using two blocks. One of them has a becket to attach the rope end to.
The rope at the bottom-right leads down to a cleat.
Also another 2 blocks to split out each of the 2 pairs (1 pair front, 1 pair rear).
The rear end is surprisingly heavy, and a lot of extra force is sometimes required to pull it off the tub bolts if the roof holes catch on the tub bolt threads.
So, make sure all the fixings are sound. I used 6mm yachting rope and matching blocks from the chandlers.
I use climbing tape as slings. One goes under the rear top "door" hinges (close it securely afterwards). One under the front through the doors.
Use Sheet Bends to join the climbing tape to the 6mm rope.

Wouldn't mind seeing your train project when you're finished.  We have an attic that will be converted into "war room" once Grover's running.  One of the things I'm thinking about adding is a suspended HO scale system.

HO at 1/87 scale is a bit smaller than OO at 1/76..  but not a lot, you could almost use them together, in fact in OO or 4mm scale the track is technically under size ,  wheras HO is about right... The first train set i had in the mid 60s was a Playcraft by Jouef (French) clockwork effort, that was HO.  America I believe  uses HO as it's standard train set size , compared to Uk with all the usual hornby etc stuff in OO..

While we're on wipers, this morning I finished servicing my Lucas FW2 wiper motors using parts supplied by HNJ Engineering.

Very impressed with the quality of the parts.

Working on the Land Rover is such a joy when you use parts which look and feel so good and fit so perfectly.

But then, I suspect you'd expect nothing less from an aero-engineer  ;)

Here is a good size comparison of the train scales.  I always thought they were the same on both sides of the pond.  Aren't they?   ???

http://rrmodelcraftsman.com/model-train-scale-gauge/

I'm not a train and model train enthusiast to the extent my father-in-law is; he is into O & G scales.  I have a couple of train sets I like because of what they are - the "Orient Express" and "The Flying Scotsman".  Both of them are HO scale.

He's into American steam and I'm into British steam.

There was a scheme called the Sky Hook railway involving a layout suspended in a similar way, quite an old magazine I think it was in.

I've seen this done before a few times but I think the first time I saw it was in the mid '70s.  It seemed to get more popular later in the 70s.  Was in a magazine from the '70s?

First time I saw it was in a restaurant in Colorado.  It traveled all over the restaurant; anywhere from 3' to 8'+ off the ground.  Several train shops did this as well.  There use to be a chain of restaurants here in the US wherein your food was brought to you on a flat car attached to a G scale train.  There is one left in Kansas City.

Another hobby of mine, which my father detested while I was growing up, is also British - miniature historical wargaming.

So let's see.... I'm into British food, beer, steam, cars, military history, and historical wargaming - just to name a few.  My best mate has often asked "did you get switched at birth with an American baby" or "why don't you just move to Britain".  He about fainted when he found out that, as an Army officer cadet I was on the "Cadet Exchange" list with the British Army.

I'd never run across "HNJ Engineering" while searching for parts - thanks!  There are a few parts I do need to get for Grover's wiper motors so I'll check them out.

Thanks again!  :tiphat

Wouldn't mind seeing your train project when you're finished.  We have an attic that will be converted into "war room" once Grover's running.  One of the things I'm thinking about adding is a suspended HO scale system.

Looks like the train thing is going a bit viral.. I get to mix two of my interests in the one forum... perhaps we need a new section for "railways"??  ;)

Anyway, here are 3 old pics of the "train-set-o-matic" lift system when it was newly installed a few years ago. Just the other day I've replaced the two cheap double-blocks on the ceiling section with much better 350kg-rated ones from the chandlers, and also put stronger dyneema cord holding those double-blocks. This follow from v1.0 of the new Land-Rover roof-o-matic system when I destroyed one of the cheaper double-blocks, and lost confidence in them. The train set (I am meant to call it a "model railway" but I stubbornly stick with "train set" myself), is 3mx3m, N gauge (9mm between tracks (1:160), but the stock bodies are confusingly 1:148 UK scale). The set stays completely level as it raises/lowers. Human powered, with a 4:1 reduction set of blocks, and a bag of diving weights for a part counter-balance. When it's lowered, 4 corners slot into mounts which are rawl-bolted into the masonry of the wall structure.
There are 8 attachment points, and also 8 safety "sligns" which are clipped on when its fully raised, so the weight is off the rope/pulley system when its stored away. This removes the possibility for single-point-of-failure in the pulley system resulting in total collapse when you're working in the study underneath it!

What the special projects department did with their new diesel SII in 1961 .... (from "Land Rover The Unbeatable 4x4" by Slavin & Mackie, ISBN 0 85429 433 3, pub. Haynes, which is stuffed full of SIIs doing odd things).

This is a similar (but slightly different reg) vehicle to the one ("2868 UE") in the picture posted above by Correus, but on "6064 UE" they've kept rubber tyres on, to increase traction (and, more importantly, braking ability!), and used pony wheels for "steering".

"In 1961, it was decided that we should introduce an enlarged version of the diesel engine, up from 2 litres to 21/4 litres capacity. The Publicity Department were at somewhat of a loss to know how best to put this across and get maximum ..."

Great stuff..! Of course as alluded to, the snag is stopping a train when it's under way..
Wagons are  surprisingly easy to push along once you've first got them rolling tho,  when I was working on the railway we were often doing welding on wagons and used to shift them along the track occasionally, with a couple of us just pushing..
The Land Rover  "loco" hauled version would need a decent brake van on the back I'd think.. :agh

Not strictly speaking my series 2, but today I was mostly making a new gearbox cover for a pal's 2a.

He got a new (shielder) bulkhead and the fit/shape of the gearbox tunnel was way off, so the old gearbox cover didn't fit. It was also a bit holey, so I thought I'd have a bash at making a new one to suit.

109" SW front brakes -  11" x 3" TLS and reputed to be a pain to bleed.  So with a leaking brake cylinder I set to work with some trepidation.   Pic below shows it had to be done.

Turns out, all straight forward and with the help of a cheap 'Vizibleed' from ebay - everything went according to plan.  Very unusual for any task on GEU!  :-X

Picture is before.  Bled and found the pedal travelled a little further than I liked before going solid and a bit of adjustment later was just as it should be.  If only every job was like this!

Thanks! It was a bit of an experiment, I'd change a couple of things if I did it again but I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Unusually for me, I actually didn't take that many pictures. I made a card template of the bulkhead, then cut a sheet of steel that was that size plus enough for the flanges. The flanges were made with a tipping die in the bead roller and a shrinker/stretcher, the sticky out bit for the starter was with a step die in the bead roller, then some smashing with a hammer, then some smoothing/stretching with an english wheel (a recent acquisition, I'm very much still getting the hang of it).

I realise that description is useless without pictures, sorry... The next challenge is a bonnet frame, I'll get some pics when I do that.

Exhaust and Inlet manifold off to sort out a broken stud at the manifold/pipe join.

Replacement installed, as while trying to remove the stud with the assistance of Manxcat the errant stud sheared off flush. The exhaust manifold can go into the "awaiting work" heap.

... Now awaiting a replacement carb insulator as the original was cracked and broken... :-(

Another 5 minute job that'll have taken the vehicle out of action for over a week by the time it is fixed :-(

Down to Travis Perkins for 12 bags of ballast and 3 bags of cement, to test out the new Jones springs I put on the rear end earlier in the summer.
I think that works out as about 300-350 kg in the tub, plus me takes it to 375-425 kg.
If I had a couple of passengers that would be me at the theoretical half-tonne payload maximum?
The rear axle was sitting about 3/4 inch off the rubber stops when standing, and probably hit them a couple of times while driving.
I was quite glad when it all sat back level again at the original height when everything was unloaded.
You need to remember to lift the tailgate before loading too many bags, or it sits on the gate and you can't close it!
Got some nice chat from the man on the till about my classy wheels ... :)

Fitted the bonnet for the first time since my Series 2 arrived as a project.  Sadly, it scraped the paint on the one side when lifted up to its fully open height (resting on the screen).  Having adjusted the closing mechanism and fitted the prop handle it closes and opens nicely as it should.

My recent fitment of a new screenwash bottle (2 weeks back before a holiday) was less of a success.  The none return valve was the site of a leak, so my chassis in now pink (screen wash) where all the contents slowly dripped away.  I might just fit a new screen wash hose all the way minus the return valve...

Replaced the alternator. Had to put the old fan blades and pulley wheel on the spare. Had to adapt the when coming to put them spare on and use a jubilee clip instead of a nut to keep the pulley wheel on. The spare has a damaged thread and the nut just wouldnt go on. The old dud one will be taken to the auto electrics to see if its cost effective worth fixing.

Finally relented and bypassed the Smiths heater matrix as the puddle of coolant on the floor wasn't getting any smaller. Seems a shame after 52 years but can't run the risk of it bursting under pressure. I will think about a replacement or repair over the winter.

Also made an extra instrument panel from a plastic enclosure to hold my digital voltmeter, USB sockets and accessory plug. The box has 4 magnets and non slip mat stuck on the back and it plugs into the dash using the red and black banana sockets so it is a 5 second job to remove and hide under the seat if I'm trying for originality.  :)

After all that went out for the day to Petworth house.
