Turn the engine with the starting handle first
makes a smoother start with the Starter...

once upon a time i was at an historical meeting
for Maserati cars with my Hellbob S2

starter at this time was out of order.

i use my starter handle to start engine and was the hero of the day for the guys

kind regards

As you have recently bought the Land Rover have you looked behind the seats to see if there is one attached to the bulkhead?

Land Rovers were supplied with them and that is where they used to clip in into place along with the metal jack handle. On the 10 seat, 109" station wagons both are under the second row seats. Not sure where they were stashed in the 12 seat station wagons?

Craig.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't so I've looked behind the seats and sure enough there are some clips, but no handle, and what appears to be a random key screwed to the panel? So at least I've got somewhere to put one :-)

I've used mine and it's got me out of a real hole more than once! I had a problem with the engine cutting out in hot weather at idle... suspected fuel vaporisation (turned out to be a duff coil overheating)... and the endeavours to re-start the engine on the starter did for the weak battery more than once. Faced with a loooong wait and ignominy of recovery or some hand cranking, the cranking was always worth a go and never failed to spark the old girl into life eventually  :-*
I did read up on the official Land Rover procedure for hand cranking before having a go though as I'm aware of the painful consequences associated with starting handles. I also found it was easier to get her to catch if I opened the hand throttle a smidge... It's very satisfying!

Its not difficult to crank a petrol if all is well - trouble is you're normally only cranking it when all is not well - which can be very hard work and also risks the backfire as fuel and sparks haven't happened at the right time.
