Drilbox brand storage for drill bits, taps and dies
« on: March 13, 2021, 11:06:15 PM »

Some time ago I purchased some drill storage boxes branded Drilbox.  I think they also make storage boxes for taps and dies but I can no longer find a supplier.  Wondered if anyone had come across these and knew a supplier, or can recommend storage boxes for taps and dies.

The well know Internet application "Google" gives multiple hits for "Drilbox" who are a company based in Germany. Perhaps contact them for UK based suppliers...

I found the company but wondered if anyone already knew of a Uk supplier.  The one I used to use changed hands and no longer seems to supply such things.  I can email them and see what they say.

Back in the day it was customary to keep your taps & dies in tobacco tins such as ...

auction: #224376873418

auction: #402734108832

When we were allowed out you could wander round autojumbles with loads of stands displaying such tins with "treasure trove" for little money.
I hope the sellers have stocked up ready for when we can go autojumbling again.

Many of mine are in such tins. A bit difficult with the 1" BSW stuff though - one die, one tin!

I remember visiting my grandfather as a child and he had dozens of tobacco tins used for storage.

I've done similar searches in the past trying to find some thing a bit more organised than tobacco tins without much luck, nearest possible option I cam across was this.

I've looked at those too.  I suppose this is the issue of not buying everything in set and ending up with lots of sizes that you don't need!!!

With taps , I have just drilled some MDF and stored them upright in holes like a drill stand .

For dies you just need blind holes of larger diameter in a suitable bit of plank. Nicely finished hardwood looks good, old floorboard works just as well.

I posted a link earlier in this thread to some purpose made wooden boxes, but I thought they weren't ideal because they were a bit "all singing" in that they had spaces for taps and dies and holders but only two taps per size. However Kernowcam's separate post on the same subject had me doing a Google for "thin wooden storage boxes" and there seems to be a good choice, eg

https://www.jacksonsart.com/jackson-s-wooden-utility-storage-box-beech-wood-32x17x4cm?channable=0044a569640035343336335d&___store=jacksonsart_en&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0caCBhCIARIsAGAfuMyaYZammSMpjEGWP5HOIu3O4qB9yBTJCGqIdfrwTVFbfrCRnEFWKxIaAn9GEALw_wcB

Anyone with a bit of woodworking skill should be able to customise a wooden insert to fit into one of those.
