Help please navigating website
« on: January 03, 2021, 01:18:01 PM »

I can get onto the website and access all the workshop manuals ok. But my problem is when looking through the green bible , how do you jump to a page without scrolling through all the others ?
This is on an iPad.

Thanks

Isn't it a .pdf? Therefore don't you download it to your device and look at it on a pdf viewer?

I'm sure Wittsend will be able to clarify, but I think that as the whole document is just one big PDF, I don't think there is a simple solution. It would need somebody to run an index for the whole PDF and I think that's quite a lot of work.
What you could do is note the page numbers that start each section and enter the required page number to get you closer without having to scroll through 300 odd pages!

The manuals are uploaded/downloaded in pdf format.

The documents are not indexed - it would be a massive undertaking.

You have to scroll through the document to find what you want.
But familiarity leads you to be able to scroll to within a page of 2 of what you want.

When you go to a parts counter, the sales assistants are very good and can flick through the manual to the section of interest.

In time, you'll be able to skim through the pdf to the bit(s) you want.
Sometimes Land Rover play tricks on you and put some things in non-logical places.

I believe you can spend serious money for fully indexed pdf manuals on DVD.

... and sometimes you just can't beat an old fashioned hard copy of the manual.

It all adds to the fun.

At the very front of the Workshop manual, before Section A, is a Detailed Index. This is 15 pages long.
This is only text, no hyperlinks to specific pages, but reading it does give you a clue as to which Section, and page within that section, a specific operation is on.

It's perhaps important to note that the WM pages are NOT numbered 1 to 385 (whatever).
Rather it is split into sections, and pages numbered within each section.
Thus, if we look in the Detailed Index for 'Bumper Front' we will be told Removal/Refit is on page J1-2. That is, page 2 of Section J1.

The Parts Manual is organised slightly differently, but you were asking about the Workshop Manual.
Whichever, if you want a clickable index you will have to create one yourself.
Depending on which PDF reader you use, it may be possible, within each PDF document, to create an index for that document. I have not attempted this myself.

Regards.

I believe it is stored as pdf images. Not as pdf text. Indexing this would be an enormous task. Probably quicker to buy the book!

I do have (source unknown) a Series 3 parts list which is searchable. It's not very good though. Easier to use it manually.

I tried to convert the manuals and parts lists into searchable PDF's. The free software I used however didn't do a particularly great job and didn't go as far as creating a clickable index. I might give it another go if I find someone with a paid subscription to adobe though.

On your iPad or iPhone you have an app called ‘books’ which you could use to open the pdf. Once you have it in Books you can bookmark favourite pages for faster access. It’s not exactly what you are after but it would at least allow you to bookmark chapter headings or favourite sections for faster access.
