Advice please
« on: July 10, 2022, 07:47:34 AM »

Hi all, I’m after some advice with regards to MOT’s. When I first got my S2 back on the road a few years back I had it tested just to be sure all was ok and have continued doing so for the last few years. Now the question being, because I’ve had it MOT’d do I need to continue with the yearly checkup or as it’s exempt can I now legally still use it on the road although the MOT has expired?? Am I risking a fine/points?

Any help appreciated.

My understanding is that if it is now classified as a Historic Vehicle on the DVLA database, that no MOT is required and having an MOT test is a voluntary matter. If you run a vehicle check on the government website, what does it say?

I believe you have to satisfy two criteria.

Firstly that the vehicle is registered as Historic.

Secondly that it is not "substantially modified"

Then register it as MoT exempt

Others here will no doubt correct any of this and fill in the details for you!!

I checked mine on the DVLA site and it says on the MOT section.
"No Results Returned." It's on a green background and mine is Historic. Yours is on a red background. Check it's classed as historic.

That suggests to me that you shouldn't use it on the road until you have jumped through the DVLA hoops......

Sorn it, then retax it, online
There will then be a presumption / declaration for you to tick to say that it is not substantially modified
There are modifications that are permitted, but that is where we, the CLub, come in rather than DVLA

Both my Tax and MOT expired whilst we were in the first lockdown and I was doing some work on the transfer box so couldn’t use it anyway. If I remember correctly I put it on Sorn and then when  I was ready to go again I just went online and taxed it , declaring Mot exemption at the same time .

On the dvla database it shows at taxed and on theMot box No Results Returned on a green background.

It has to say Historic on the Logbook, you can go to the post office and they will change it. They send your logbook off, when it comes back it will state Historic as the taxation class.

Glad I read this, so I went to the post office and they have changed my log book, the S3 is now historic on the v5 and I assumed that meant they would have done the MOT at the same time.

Nope red background so been driving around like that for months - and because the DVLA is still in the Stone Age you can’t change it online, got to go and find someone with a printer - print out a form onto recycled dead trees and then post it to them - presumably where it will take weeks to reach some ones desk.

Good job there are no police anymore to spot it driving around since April I suppose I have got off lucky

Don’t worry about it, if it’s historic it’s MOT exempt. End of story.

Ok, interestingly I’ve just gone back on the DVLA website and for some unknown reason it’s now showing “no results returned” in a green box, how strange. I’ve been out in her today anyway.

Hi,

I presume your truck is also VED exempt?

Probably OT in your case ... If it is exempt, and if you have been paying VED, I'd assume you are due for a refund.

Er ... do you need to SORN a vehicle that is VED exempt?

Its still taxed, just at zero rate, so the duty process is still active.
