Done some more tidying up round the engine bay ... things were going well ...

Until - calamity - one of the cables holding up the garage door (Henderson up-and-over double) snapped (after 33 years use).
Door suspended at a crazy angle - but we managed to manhandle it back into position, but it's very dodgy.
Now the only way in is through the partially blocked side door  >:(

You've done well!
Mine snapped recently after only 25 years  :shakeinghead
It's  is a mighty Spring though, not a cable so I linked two coils with an old style strong key ring  ???

Continued rigging up the electrics, interior light now working, then not, then working again, dickie switch now replaced. Figured out how I wired the alarm twenty odd years ago, a then modern alarm wired up to work on positive earth, could I remember how I wired it?..... Reluctant to do a trial and error in case I blew it but what do you know - it worked first go  :first
Looking forward to doing the first longish trip in a few weeks, ten miles down the Clyde valley for lunch....
Just got confirmation from insurers of the agreed valuation after sending a self penned report and photos.
Starting to enjoy having a Landie again. :RHD

Got the engine running and went for a short drive, the first in 40 years - the newly machined pistons made a big difference - it still turns over a bit slowly, I resorted to a splash of "start pilot" to get it over the hump.

Plenty still to do - the water pump leaks, there are no brakes, there's no reverse gear, one injector pipes leaks and could not be tightened. Oh, and there are no electrics at all.

Here's the beast:

Popped down to Wickes.
Amazing how you can get an eight foot sheet into a 3 foot tub!

A sort of mini-workshop day with Manxcat, working on recommissioning the NATO socket and adding a 12N socket, in preparation for an adjustable hitch and swappable "carrier" plates, one for 50mm ball, one for NATO ring.

Got thus far and then found the section of reasonable looking "recovered" 7 core cable planned to be patched in was actually past its best, too oxidised to take a decent soldered joint, even using a bit from the centre of the run.

Did a few other bits of tidying up, made a list of components to buy in. A good use of a dull and drizzly day !

Somewhat OT because I used the 90 but this is a route we've used for S2C Green Road Runs before....a section where I warn people that they may damage paintwork.

A neighbour, out on his lunchtime mountain bike excursion came across this clown 3 miles into the Forest, "The gate was open so I just....".  Discovering that the track was getting more rutted and wetter he had tried to turn around rather than reverse....and promptly stuck both rear wheels in the ditch. When I arrived he was trying to jack the vehicle up enough to get rocks under the rear wheel, front wheel spinning, burning clutch smell scaring off the Bears and Wolves....

A tow strap to his front recovery point "at your own risk... " and some gentle low-box reversing pulled him out, ready to continue his trip to Skye.

I doubt a recovery truck would have even gone down there, the last time some-one called one out to pull some-one out of the ditch on the actual "Forest Drive" they waited 5 hours and got a bill for £240.

Finished the spare wheel off and got it mounted on the bonnet - Not original, but the PO swapped the original bonnet for one with a mount and I quite like the look.

Rear seats - Got the frames back from being blasted and painted them using Zinga spray. If I am honest, it looks more grey than anything and doesn’t blend in well. The rear seats project was being done on a tight budget, perhaps in hindsight I should have coughed up for the galvanising to be done. On the plus side, the cushions have come up a treat. They were limestone and I have painted them grey.

^^^^ Good work  - but yes, those seat frames look more as if its an undercoat than a "galv" finish ?

Try Zinga's Zingalu product. If has a small amount of aluminium added to their zinc rich paint and gives a finish that looks closer to weathered galvanising. I used it on my windscreen frame and was very pleased with the result. It matched the 50 year old galvanised trim on the rear tub. The drawback is Zingalu is only available as an aerosol.

Got up this bright and sunny morning, looked at the dozen or so jobs in the garage,

Then went for a ride round and some greenlaning - I have to pick and choose the wider ones with the 2B.

First pic is where I abandoned ship and picked the mushrooms in pic 2 [and a lot more beside]. Pic 3 is just in Staffordshire on the long abandoned 18th century Cheadle to Nottingham Turnpike - a long elevated causeway and multiple arch bridge over the River Dove.
4th pic. [not very good] is my favourite sloe gathering area - there is a huge crop but they are only just starting to turn from green to purple so a few weeks yet. Was gobsmacked at how that one has grown in since last year, definitely spent most of the time pushing new growth vegetation out of the way with the 2B camper body.

Finished the day off by stopping at another place I know and picking some blackberries and crab apples -- it's jelly time.
