What is this ???
« on: September 10, 2020, 11:17:11 AM »

Morning All,

I was given a box of tools yesterday , mainly Whitworth and BSF spanners - but it also included something I didn't recognise . Can someone tell me what it is and what it was for .

Thanks in advance

Its not a 'spanner' as the slots don't have any flats on them. More like a version of a hub puller. Slot the 'spanner' end around that to be pulled, lean on the knob and lever up with the long bar.

Didn't think it was a ball joint separator as it was too flimsy. Valve compressor then.

Any use to anyone?

The beehives in the background confused me!...it’s not a hive tool!

I did rather well, Two Paynes style poly nucs, a couple of smokers and there are three or four National hives + supers up for grabs as well.

Could you post a photo of the complete item. It might be easier to identify.

Hi,

Valve spring compressor was my first/only thought, too.

But  it might need to do two valves at a time? Side valve?

Valve spring compresser, one end clips to head bolt, the other end goes over the top of the valave. Haven't seen one in years, and it looks in great condition too. Never seen one that still had the knob on it before.

Hi,

Talking of valve spring compressors, I never use one to remove valves. If push comes to shove (and my lions are gridded) I reckon I could remove 8 valves in about 10 seconds.

1. Lay head on bench, valves pointing skywards.

2. Stand 14mm plug spanner vertically on top of valve collar.

3. Hold plug spanner firmly in place, to stop it going walk-about. (resulting in collets flying in all directions)

4. Hit plug spanner hard with something like a one pound ball pein hammer.

5.  Remove socket to find collets lying peacefully on top of the valve collar, with valve spring ready to be lifted off.

6. Unfortunately, replacing the collets does take little longer.  :'(
