Does your Breakdown cover actually cover your vehicle ?
« on: September 22, 2021, 02:20:31 PM »

A cautionary tale... called out this lunchtime to help a woman broken down on "The Forest Drive" with a flat battery. She had breakdown cover with "Green Flag", has been paying them since she bought her camper van in 2019.... they refused to come out as it was over 20 years old. Check the small print !

Just had a look on their web site where they say:

"Answer: There’s no age limit on vehicle cover within the UK. Personal cover applies to vehicles that are no more than 15 years old."

So if she was driving her own vehicle she should have been covered.

Classic vehicle insurance with breakdown cover covers the particular vehicle on the policy. With older but non classical vehicles over 10 years old (61 plates now) it's hit and miss.n

Confused ?  She said she bought the vehicle in 2019, so it was not on hire.  Its not the first time I've heard of Green Flag refusing to help older vehicles, happened with a 90 that broke on a Green Road Run here a few years back. We dragged it to the tarmac but when GF turned up the driver would not touch it... SLROC members organised recovery to a local members yard.

My Land Rovers are fully covered on their classic car policy.

I am also personally covered for any vehicle I might be driving, or even as a passenger, by 2 other breakdown policies.
1) with LV for our modern eurobox cars
and
2) by the AA through my bank, which is free.

For example -
I could have Britannia rescue "recover" me to the recent S2C Rally at Ripon and then have the AA recover me home.
And this would have been cheaper than the cost of my fuel  :stars

Just thought it wise to double check, I'm with LV / Britannia Rescue, they confirmed that vehicle age was not a condition of cover. If it was legal, taxed, MOT'd, serviced, that was enough. When I specifically double checked about age the operator was clearly swiched on enough to know about zero tax for older vehicles.

I told her I was reassured, which seemed to please her :-)

Regards.

I have specific classic car cover on the 88" but I've just taken out annual travel insurance from the bank which includes named person RAC cover. I need to phone the RAC & check details.

They surely know how old the vehicle is because they have the model details and the registration number?

I haven't had to use my Breakdown Cover yet (touching wood frantically), it's provided through RH Insurance, which is for Classic Vehicles, so shouldn't be an issue......

I think if I did worry, and needed to check, I would prefer to email my breakdown provider to get proof- and I'd keep a hard copy in my vehicle just to be sure.  A telephone conversation is ok, but written confirmation is much better.

You don't want the argument when you're broken down........

I have breakdown cover with the AA and not had any issues. Funny that every time it's been an old land rover, they sub it out to a local recovery firm to sort out the problem. Cannot fault the service so far.

One of the reasons I have stuck with the rac on personal cover is all off my vehicles are covered and the Vw transporter camper is not excluded.

Been really handy as the Vw (1995) has been the one giving trouble over the years. Relay from Wales (oil temp sender spewing oil , 10 min job but rac man could not diagnose. Just happened again and a 10 min. £ 15 fix.)
Also cat decided to clog up and brake down, again easy recovery on big red taxi.

So far landy never broken down!

RAC just requoted and gone up from £105 for 2 to £117. As usual, yawn, rang and moaned and reduced to 105 for 18 months,
Realised my Tesco points are just about there to cover so taken that route.
