Suggestions for a reasonably "period" reversing light ?
« on: January 23, 2022, 08:29:39 PM »

Tonka never had a reversing light but having one would be quite useful. I'm pondering on what to fit. To keep with the Ex MoD look I was thinking a standard military side/tail light fitting but with a later white "mushroom" head and a 21w bulb. What would have been the civilian fit for the late 60s ?  I'm trying to avoid rectangular plastic boxes...

Thanks !

Holdens Vintage & Classic have a small selection of decent quality reversing lamps.

People also used to fit spot and fog lamps on the back as reversing lamps.

Wipac series 210 units - I've got a pair of those I bought on eBay for my Station Wagon rebuild. The only thing is that even as a pair, I'm not convinced they will be that effective. For classic originality they are perfect, but for practicality, I'd go for something much brighter for an everyday use vehicle - especially on a farm. In your case, anything other than a flush mount will probably get modified by your friendly moos.

How out of place would a late (2001 onwards) Defender reverse light unit look?

Those Wipac 210s are very effective if you put a 55w spotlight bulb in them.
Did this on my rally mini back in the 80’s. Worked well as the proper glass lenses don’t melt!
Nowadays I’m sure you could find a very bright led that would fit in there.

Thanks folks, some good food for thought there. The Wipac 210s with spotlight bulbs look good.

I just matched the indicators but with white lenses. I haven't noticed them as being incongruous.

Have you considered a spotlight mounted on the hard top Gene? It would double as a work light and would perhaps be less susceptible to bovine interface?

I've just repurposed an old Hella fog light. It's yellow but it's bright enough for reversing.

Jus done a little thinking , there are dual colour led s white/ yellow for side lights , with the appropriate flasher for the indicator side could these be used with a white lens as rear indicator/ reverse light in the existing rear indicator fitting , wired so that white led is energised by the reverse switch ,  would remove the need for bolt ons
